This activity was part of 3.5-year project funded by HGCA and SEERAD to develop detailed crop growth benchmarks and targets for winter barley (HGCA project 2514), which will culminate in a comprehensive guide for growers in 2005.
Six reference sites were set up around the UK in key winter barley growing areas. The crops at these sites were monitored closely through the growing seasons of three years and their progress recorded.
Details of each site, including nitrogen inputs, are recorded so that their impact on crop growth and development can be assessed. Canopy size, biomass and the number of shoots are all illustrated with graphics, along with meteorological data. Photographs are also included for ease of comparison.

The barley growth guide will be available at the Cereals Event in June 2005.
