Plant breeders have been developing conventionally bred cultivars that are particularly suitable for the biolubricant market, which is currently around 1% of UK sales/annum in a total market or 840,000 tonnes/annum. No information is currently available on the impact of location, soil type and crop management on the fatty acid profile on these cultivars. This information is needed to retain and hopefully increase the UK oilseed rape market.
| |
To evaluate and promote the production and value of winter oilseed rape cultivars for biolubricants and other specific market uses.
| |
Establish a series of field trials investigating the impact of agronomic practice, soil type and location on oil yield and fatty acid profile to evaluate the consistency of the cultivars that best meet the market requirements. Develop approaches, such as demonstration projects, to increase demand for the products of the new cultivars.
To protect or expand the market of UK produced oilseed rape for both food and non-food uses, by ensuring that it meets the competition from imported high oleic oilseed rape and sunflower oil.
