In this issue: Leaf miner attack on oilseed rape Over the last week there have been numerous reports of leaf miner attack on oilseed rape. The most obvious symptoms of attack are white/yellow blotch mines on the leaves through which it is usually possible to see the leaf miner larva. Other symptoms that may be seen are tiny pinpricks or punctures on the underside of leaves or cotyledons. This year this pest seems to be present in much higher numbers than normal. It is very unlikely that any insecticide treatment will be required to control leaf miners. Firstly, it is generally only the outer leaves that are infested and these usually die during the winter. Secondly, the larvae will soon pupate, and although there can be two or three generations each year it is very unlikely that there will be another in October. In addition, there are no approved products for leaf miner control in rape.
