Defra conducted a consultation exercise on its agricultural statistics over the summer 2010 to seek feedback on the use of the statistics and to explore options for sourcing data.  As part of this exercise, the AHDB MI/HGCA Planting Survey was identified as a possible alternative for the Defra December Survey.  Following further detailed discussions, AHDB MI, in consultation with Defra, has made the decision that all future AHDB MI/HGCA Planting Surveys will be carried out at this earlier time in order to replace the Defra December Survey for the collection of the same key arable crop statistics. Defra will still continue to publish the other livestock statistics that formed part of the December Survey – further information will be available at  -http://www.defra.gov.uk/statistics/foodfarm/landuselivestock/decembersurvey/

Hence, this AHDB MI/HGCA Planting Survey is the last Planting Survey to be performed over the Spring and released over the Summer. The next Planting Survey will be released in early 2012 and will cover winter plantings and spring planting intentions for harvest 2012.
