How to Search

The HGCA site provides two levels of search to suit different requirements;

  • Quick search
  • Advanced Full Content search

Quick Search
The Quick Search can be accessed any time from the search bar at the top of the page. Enter the word or phrase you would like to find, then click on 'GO' .

It  allows you to search the titles and abstracts from all site content and uploaded documents. It returns results for current and archived content . This is shown by the date information in the results list (see fig 1:)

Once you have run a search, the results are listed 20 items at a time. If you need to search again or require more options click the 'Search Again' button.

No Results Found ?

Sometimes a search may return no results. This could be because the terms used were too specific to be found using the 'Quick Search' or because the search text contained only common words that are ignored e.g. in, at, on, but, the, by etc

  • Tip 1: Try using single words or short phrases first.
  • Tip 2: Quick search only produces results where the exact search expression occurs in the title, abstract or description of the content, publications and PDFs.
  • Tip 3: Try the 'Advanced Search' for conplex expressions/words

More Options

Quick search allows you to search either by Relevance/Date and by Active/Active and Archived content.

Relevance/Date
This allows you to sort the results either by the relevance of the words found in the 'Title' and 'Abstract', or by the date published (most recent first).

Active/Active and Archived content
Active content searches return results from the current visible site content. For a more comprehensive search, use the include option 'Active and Archived content'.

Advanced Full Content search
An advanced search allows you to search the content of all the pages of the site including downloadable documents (i.e those in other formats e.g. PDF, Word etc.)

You can access the Advanced search from the search results or search form for the Quick Search tool.

The advanced search is most usefull when searching for specific terminiology, exact phrases etc.  If you search for a simple phrase e.g. 'Winter Wheat' in the Advanced search, you will return hundreds of results due to the common occurance of the phrase.
