Variety notes - Winter wheat
« Back
  • Hereward is a nabim Group 1 variety. It is still regarded as a high quality wheat but it requires good premium payments to make it economic.

  • nabim reports that although grown on a decreasing acreage this variety is a good benchmark for Group 1 and is still popular with millers. Contract growing schemes are available and some millers may offer further premiums for higher protein content.

  • Classified as ukp bread wheat. Meets the specifications of the export brand and has support from end-users.

  • Now takes a relatively small place in the UK bread-making market with around 2% of 2007 seed certification weights.

  • High protein content and specific weight.

  • Should be given priority at harvest to protect Hagberg and grain quality.

  • Yield potential around 2% below that of Malacca.

  • Susceptible to eyespot and rather susceptible to brown rust.

  • Breeder/ UK Agent: RAGT seeds Ltd (www.ragt.co.uk ).
