New Product Development (NPD) was identified by the Cereals Industry Forum as one of the weaknesses in the industry. This was particularly highlighted by the individual company Probes conducted by Comparison International Ltd, using methodology developed by CBI, and comparing companies in the UK cereals industry with a database of 6000 companies worldwide. Many companies did not complete the sections of the questionnaire with regard to product innovation, and of those that did, most were shown to have a below average performance.
New product innovation at any stage of the chain, or across the supply chain, can help to create new markets, add value and create new revenue streams for the whole industry. HGCA is running its own initiatives or working with others to help promote innovation; you can find more about its activities here.
You will find more information on the way in which NPD has been identified as an issue and how it is being addressed on the case studies page.
