Pest management

These ongoing projects relate to the work that HGCA has commissioned in relation to cereal and oilseed pest control.

Click on the titles for an upshot of the problem to be addressed, the aims, the approach and the benefits to the industry. Also will be attached the latest information in the form of Annual Project Reports (APRs) or Interim Reports.

Cereals

RD-2006-3279 The potential to control insects and other organisms antagonistic to wheat by the up regulation of Hydroxamic acids
To investigate the potential of the hydroxamic acids for pest control against insects, in particular aphids, and other antagonistic organisms in wheat.

RD-2004-3079 Biopesticides for the control of storage insect pests (SA 269)(Link 0967)
To provide the basis for a whole new class of biological pesticides for use in the storage of a wide range of commodities including cereals and oilseeds.

RD-2004-3153 Autumn survey of wheat bulb fly incidence
To allow farmers to determine the need for WBF seed treatment based on measuring the annual risk of wheat bulb fly incidence.

RD-2005-3201 Defining and managing risks to safety and quality during food and feed grain storage LK0985
An industry-led initiative facilitated by HGCA, has identified areas within the grain storage process where there is insufficient knowledge to properly assess and control risks. These areas require that innovative research be undertaken to meet the industry need for a scientifically validated guide to best practice.

RD-2006-3293 New environmentally-friendly technologies for slug control based on orally-delivered fusion proteins containing specific molluscicidal toxins.
To validate and develop a class of novel molluscicidal products, which have the potential to overcome problems regarding negative environmental impacts and variable efficacy of current treatments.

Oilseeds

RD-2005-3242 Re-evaluating thresholds for pollen beetle in oilseed rape
The aim of the work is to produce up-to-date thresholds for pollen beetle control in oilseed rape by relating the potential for pest damage to the inherent tolerance of the crop.

RD-2007-3394 Development of an integrated pest management strategy for control of pollen beetle in winter OSR [ LINK 9108]
This project will devise and evaluate components of an integrated pest management strategy for pollen beetles in winter oilseed rape (WOSR).

Pest control in both cereals and oilseeds

RD-2006-3293 New environemtnally-friendly technologies for slug control based on orally delivered fusion proteins containing specific molluscicdal toxins LK991 To validate and develop a class of novel molluscicidal products, which have the potential to overcome problems regarding negative environmental impacts and variable efficacy of current treatments.

RD-2008-3475 Aphid advisory alerts
Forecasts of aphid flight times and numbers in spring and early summer will be provided in early March each year. Information on the insecticide resistance status of Myzus persicae and the presence in them of TUYV will also be provided. Longer term assessments of the potential impacts of climate change will also be provided.
