HGCA Planting and Variety Surveys 2008

HGCA Planting and Variety Surveys see significant increases to wheat and barley area for harvest '08. Total wheat area is estimated at 2.07M ha, up 14%. Spring barley area is 0.57M ha (up 14%), winter barley is 0.42M ha (up 10%), giving total barley area of 0.98M ha, up 12%. Oilseed rape area is 0.590M ha, 13% below '07 (incl OSR grown on set-aside) Set-aside area is down 46% compared to 2007 (excl OSR grown on SAS). Around 15% wheat was planted to Group 1 varieties, unchanged on '07. Group 2 account for 16% (19% in '07), Group 3 make up 23% (32% in '07) and Group 4 on 37% of the total area (27% in '07). Malting barley varieties were planted on 72% of the total area (68% in '07).
