The quality of UK wheat impressed international millers attending this year's HGCA Bread Baking Workshop. Potential customers from Spain, Portugal, Poland, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia all successfully baked their national breads using UK wheat.
"The bread baking workshop provides an excellent opportunity for overseas millers to get hands-on experience of baking with UK varieties, and for us to learn more about their requirements and markets," said Emma Finn, HGCA's Supply Chain Manager. "The event reinforces the message that the UK can provide quality wheat for export."
The practical baking sessions at the workshop used different blends of ukp and uks wheats with ukp including Cordiale, Solstice and Einstein, and uks including Claire and Robigus. One blend used contained 80% uks and only 20% ukp with pleasing results.
"We enjoyed the hands-on experience of baking with ukp and uks," said Osama Nasser, Flour Land Mills, Egypt. "I am keen to buy." Egypt is one of the world's largest importers of wheat and an important target market.
Spain, who already imports significant amounts of UK wheat, 450,000 tonnes last season, was also represented at the workshop."UK wheat has improved in quality over the years, becoming more consistent," said Jose Luis Povedano, Povedano Y Ruiz SA, Spain. "We are using more and have been impressed by the quality we have seen at this workshop." Representatives from the other five Spanish companies agreed and commented on the "excellent networking opportunity to meet UK industry representatives".
"The ukp and uks brands have helped buyers understand the quality of the UK wheat and uks is in great demand," said Emma Finn. "However we need increased production of uks varieties. Without it we will lose a premium market."
The 11th International Bread Baking Workshop was held at Campden BRI in January.
The ukp and uks export brands were introduced in November 2004 to make it easier for international buyers to understand and purchase UK milling wheat. For further information visit www.ukwheat.com
