Opportunities for UK milling wheat

There are still opportunities for this season's UK milling wheat on overseas markets according to last week's HGCA export mission. Wheat buyers from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Tunisia, and Algeria took part in a series of visits and meetings designed to show the quality of UK wheat.

"Not all buyers are covered to the end of season. So there are still opportunities to sell this year's wheat crop overseas," said Emma Finn, HGCA's Supply Chain Manager.

The three days included visits to a port and grain bourse as well as a seminar covering industry issues.

"We regularly buy uks wheat and are happy with its performance," said Patrick Nuydens, SBM Belgian Milling Co Ltd, Belgium. "The presentations we have seen on this visit were very interesting and really helped develop my knowledge of the UK cereal industry."

Delegates invited to attend included those currently buying UK grain and some who have never previously used it. This year, for the first time, representatives from Algeria attended. Algeria is a developing market with huge potential and currently imports 5.8 million tonnes of wheat annually.

"ukp and uks wheat in particular is in demand and is regularly bought by many of the countries represented. Explaining the benefits of the grain we have available is vital in maintaining continuing custom from those that already use UK grain, but we also target new markets that are less familiar with UK grain," said George Forbes, Chairman of HGCA's British Cereal Exports.

"The message for UK growers is that we are concerned over the continued production of uks (Group 3) varieties in export areas, particularly the east and southern regions," said George Forbes. "Some very promising, high-yielding, new uks varieties are coming on to the market, which will be attractive to UK growers, and also very suitable for export. Europe and North Africa offer a great marketing opportunity for the UK but we need to produce wheat suitable for their needs."
