See precision farming in practice

HGCA is holding a series of farm visits throughout the summer months to demonstrate how precision farming techniques are being used in practice. The visits are part of the year-long 'Be PRECISE' initiative providing information to growers about the benefits of precision farming.

"The farm walks will provide a great opportunity to explore aspects of precision farming in their working environment," said Ian Beecher-Jones, HGCA's project manager. "The real life experiences of farmers may help to see if any of the precision farming techniques will be acceptable on your farm."

Experts will be on hand to explain how some of the techniques used may apply to your own situation. Demonstrations will include: RTK auto-steer and controlled traffic farming, N-Sensor and variable rate applications, self propelled sprayer with auto section control, yield mapping and the latest farm management application software.

"Demonstrations will differ from event to event focusing on what techniques are used at each individual farm," said Kellie Payne, HGCA Research Communications Executive. "However our speakers have experience of many different techniques and will be able to share their knowledge on different areas of precision farming."

Andrew Cragg and Andrew Martin, neighbours from Romney Marsh are hosting the first  event on the 1st of June.  "I welcome the opportunity to have other growers visit my farm to see how I have incorporated a number of different precision farming technologies into my everyday farm practice," said Mr. Cragg. "I realise that precision farming isn't for everyone, but by building your system over time and determining which applications are best for you, the technology can work, and when it works, it works well."

Farm visits will be taking place across the country:
