One of the oldest cultivated cereals, barley is a central ingredient in making malt for beer and whisky. Most people will be familiar with barley water drinks and pearl barley (the polished grain)which is used in soups and stews. Barley is also used in bread, but much of our production is made into animal feed, especially for pigs.
