Updated information on yellow rust resistance

New information on the potential impact of new yellow rust races on adult wheat varieties has been added to HGCA’s yellow rust management publication, based on results from adult plants this season.

In 2011, a new yellow rust race was detected on the variety Warrior. A second new race was also detected on KWS Sterling.

The impact of the new races on adult wheat plants plant has been tested as part of the UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey (UKCPVS).

Several wheat varieties on the Recommended List 2012/13 are now listed as more susceptible, including Torch which is now categorised as 'Very susceptible'. Oakley, which is no longer included on the HGCA Recommended List, has also been categorised as ‘Very susceptible’. Susceptibility levels to the new races have now been established for most varieties. Other varieties, including Stigg and Crusoe, continue to show good levels of resistance.

Yellow rust can reduce wheat yields by 50% in untreated crops. This new information can be used in the selection of wheat varieties with an appropriate level of resistance that, when used in conjunction with careful crop monitoring and fungicide applications, can help to provide effective management of this disease.

Topic Sheet 117 Wheat yellow rust management is available to download from the HGCA website

Further information, as well as the opportunity to speak to experts, will be available on the HGCA stand at Cereals 2012

A new Diversification Group selection matrix will be published later this year to assist with the selection of varieties to grow adjacent to each other to minimise disease spread.
