Andrew Booth talks winter barley and oilseed rape as harvest 2012 gets underway at Savock Farm.
29 August 2012
“What a difference a week makes, well it does for some. I am sure you have all been experiencing the localised showers; we have missed the majority of them and could probably have combined nearly every day this week.
“Winter barley is all harvested. Volume and Bamboo look like they have done the best, with Bamboo's bushel weight being 60 kg/hl off the combine and Volume only 53. We are managing to raise the bushel on the Volume to 59/60 using a mobile dryer, but we are only getting an additional 2-3 kg/hl on the Bamboo.
“We started oilseed rape last Thursday only 13 days after it was sprayed. We were pushed on by the forecast and harvested the field at Ardgill, which was about 16-18% moisture content and not very exciting with the yield. We moved to Westfield which was thicker and slightly higher moisture and cut about a third before going to cut our neighbours - which we do every year.
“We have just completed the oilseed rape harvest (now at 12% moisture content) and spent a bit of time cutting two ha plots of the conventional sown and the subsoiler sown areas. First impressions is there is not a great deal of difference in the yield - over two hectares it is 60 kg.
“The clock is ticking for spring barley and winter oats as they were sprayed off today.”
