Grain Market Outlook Conference

hodgeHarvest has officially finished at A&J Farm

“Harvest has now finished at our farm in the Borders and although it was a bit later than normal, it is officially over. We are one of the lucky ones, as there is still quite a bit to cut locally, including the beans. This is going to test the combines and drivers to travel over the saturated ground. We were able to borrow a bailer and got the straw bailed two days later and all straw is gathered in.

“It certainly has been a harvest to forget, as the grain store doesn't have a full look about it and the only crop to get near to average was spring oats. They yielded a reasonable 6.9t/ha, only down 0.5t/ha or 7% - compared to average - not the 25% to 30% that all the other crops were back on average.

“Oilseed rape has had two passes with the sprayer, one herbicide and the other for flea beetle, and we also added a graminicide into the tank.  As for the slugs any pellets will be washed away and hopefully the slugs as well; we can hope anyway.

“I would normally be working long hours sowing the winter barley and wheat, but the weather has struck again with rain and it is raining again as I write. It is going to be a good few days before we can even consider taking a tractor into a field, let alone do any work once we get there.

“So I finish with hope of some better weather to help us get on with sowing before my next blog."
