Overview

An improved understanding of plant nutrition enables growers to enhance crop development and receive a better financial return while protecting the environment. HGCA funds applied research into crop nutrient requirements, practical management tools and the use of fertilisers and organic materials.

Research examples
Significant current projects include END-O-SLUDG (Project 3743), Critical-P (Project 3554) and Auto-N (Project 3530). END-O-SLUDG involves collaboration with partners across Europe to develop fertilisers from biosolids. Critical-P examines how crops respond to phosphate fertiliser and is shedding light on the rate at which the availability of soil phosphate declines. Auto-N aims to develop real-time variable rate estimates of crop nitrogen requirements.

Future research

Research into phosphorous is a key area of future research and will build on the work done in the Critical-P project. Planned research will explore how the availability of soil phosphate is affected by factors such as rotation, climate and soil amendments. The work will integrate with HGCA’s soil research and will lead to new information to help farmers to apply phosphorous in a more precise and timely way.
