HGCA, alongside other Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board divisions, offers a range of free advice, information and resources to help farmers get involved in education and support its objective of raising awareness and understanding of food and farming in the next generation.

Getting started

Many farmers are passionate about the importance of educating youngsters about where food comes from and how it is produced – but where to start? The following tips, links and resources should help:

  • HGCA is a partner of FACE (Farming and Countryside Education) which publishes a wide range of resources to help farmers get involved in education
  • Making contact with a local school can be as simple as picking up the phone. That’s what potato farmer Mike Newling found out. Read about how he planned his school visit and the response he got in our sister sector Potato Council’s leaflet here (pdf in file, will need permission from PCL to publish)
  • If you are thinking about hosting school visits on your farm, there are a number of considerations such as accessibility, safety and hygiene that you should take into account. AHDB sister division DairyCo, in partnership with FACE, has produced a free DVD guide, Open Your Farm, which you can order here or view on YouTube
  • HGCA also sponsors Open Farm Sunday, a great way to get a taste of farm visits and engage with the local community
