HGCA invests around £750,000 each year providing the cereals and oilseeds sector with timely and independent economic information and analysis. This is delivered centrally through AHDB’s Market Intelligence division.

AHDB’s Cereals and Oilseeds Market Intelligence team analyse global and UK grain and oilseeds markets to ensure the supply chain has access to unbiased, high-quality market information. It is also responsible for collecting and collating selected UK industry statistics including crop plantings, prices, supply and demand data and annual cereal quality results.

Activities

AHDB’s Market Intelligence (MI) team seeks to improve business efficiency for the cereals and oilseeds sector in three key areas:

  • Data collection
    Information is collated by the AHDB MI team through a number of sources, including Corn Returns and grower and industry surveys, in addition to the latest prices, market movements, tonnage and government statistics.
  • Interpretation
    Experienced analysts in the MI team interpret data to add value for the industry, identifying key market drivers and their impacts as well as supplying forecasts and estimates. UK supply and demand estimates are reviewed throughout the season by AHDB/HGCA’s Market Information Consultative Committee.
  • Communication
    To make the most of the information available, data and analysis is communicated through publications such as the Market Report and Prospects. Data and analysis can also be accessed via the Market Data Centre, the HGCA website and at events, including the annual Grain Market Outlook Conference, which is available to view on YouTube.
