The call is asking for research into both chemical and alternative weed control methods, specifically including spring cropping and fallowing, and will build on information generated from previous research projects.
HGCA Research and Knowledge Transfer Manager, Caroline Nicholls, said: “With weed control becoming increasingly difficult, this research call is looking to make the best use of current herbicides, while also developing sustainable non-chemical options for the future.”
“This research will form an integrated part of the current HGCA Research and Knowledge Transfer Strategy, which is looking to improve yields, improve quality, increase business profitability and protect the environment.”
Researchers are invited to submit Expressions of Interest detailing how their ideas will fill current gaps in knowledge and ultimately provide growers and agronomists with practical information on weed management.
The funding may go towards either one large project or several smaller projects running from June 2012 for up to three years.
Expressions of Interest should be submitted by 15 March 2012. More information about the application procedure can be found at www.hgca.com/calls or by contacting research@hgca.ahdb.org.uk
