Over the next 40 years, the global food system will have to feed more people with less impact. This will mean providing a higher quality diet whilst dealing with greater competition for land, water and energy and the economic and political pressures of globalisation as the climate changes.
Our farmers and growers will need to adapt to the changing conditions alongside reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases are an inevitable consequence of food production, and the challenge of reducing them whilst increasing food production is huge.
On-farm management can significantly enhance biodiversity. HGCA is committed to helping farmers achieve this whilst maintaining economically sustainable production.Link to biodiversity section of our website Farm4Bio Farm-scale management of uncropped land for biodiversity Beneficials on farmland: indentification and management guidelines Sustainable Arable Farming for an Improved Environment: Offering practical solutions to ensure key habitats for biodiversity and wildlife. www.saffie.info More on Biodiversity... |
HGCA is involved in several initiatives that aim to help growers understand how their businesses may be affected by climate change.
The Farming Futures project communicates the impacts and opportunities of climate change. HGCA's participation is co-ordinated through the Agriculture and Horticulture Research Forum.
