Causal organism - Puccinia graminis
The fungus exists in a number of forms which are specific to the host plant attacked. In Europe P. graminis f.sp. tritici affects wheat P. graminis f.sp.secalis affects barley. Oats, rye and other grass species can be affected.
Despite its name, the characteristic symptoms are of brown spore pustules occurring in stripes on leaves and stems. Later in the season, black elongate pustules containing the teliospores develop, mainly on the stems.
