Ergot

Causal organism - Claviceps purpurea

Control

Control of ergot using fungicides applied to the ear is rarely successful, although treatment can reduce infection levels. Grass weeds, particularly black-grass are an important alternative host for ergot and so their control, both in the crop and in surrounding headlands, is important in preventing infection of cereal crops. Several seed treatments will prevent germination of ergots in contaminated seed lots
