Causal organism - Omphalina pyxidata
The fungus seems to be associated with light heathland soils. In all UK cases the affected crops were on light soils, whose natural climax vegetation would be open forest or grassland scrub. There were no consistant previous crops, except that in each case winter cereals were grown every 3-4 years with sugar beet, spring barley, grass or potatoes in between. There are no cultural means known by which to reduce disease levels.
There are no known fungicides which will give control.
