Sooty moulds

Causal organism - Alternaria and Cladosporium species

Cultural control

Ensuring that the crop is not affected by stem base or root disease will help to prevent sooty moulds colonising the ears.

Chemical control

Many fungicides applied to the ears can give protection against sooty moulds. Many triazole fungicides, applied after ear emergence for the control of foliar diseases, will give suppression of sooty moulds. Tebuconazole is particularly effective. The strobilurin fungicides azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin are highly active against sooty moulds.
