Prices for malting barley, as with other cereal crops, soared in the past season in response to world supply and demand. Despite unusually high price volatility, many growers are reconsidering malting barley; there is renewed interest in spring crops in England.

Malting barley buyers set strict quality standards which can test farmers' technical knowledge and skills. Recent agronomic research has a role to help farmers achieve market requirements.

Much of the information presented here, together with updates, is available in a new leaflet 'Producing & Marketing Malting Barley. This 'signposts' site aims to provide farmers with an update on producing and marketing this specialist crop.

This 'signposts site' focuses on key areas where there has been significant change in recent years, for example new varieties, disease threats, or legislation.

It also highlights solutions provided by recent research. References and links are given to the wide range of publications and websites, produced by HGCA, MAGB and others, where further information can be found.
