  • Consult Fertiliser recommendations for agricultural and horticultural crops (RB209), 7th edition Defra (2000) to determine appropriate fertiliser inputs.
  • Consider soil mineral N against buyer's required % grain nitrogen. (A low to moderate % grain nitrogen may not be possible on fields treated with farmyard manure or slurry, or recently in grass.)
  • Before applying manures, biosolids, or compost, check buyer will accept grain.
  • Time applications to avoid lodging or unnecessary leaching.
  • Correct soil S deficiencies to protect yield and quality.
