Yellow rust can spread between wheat varieties that are susceptible to the same race of the pathogen.
The risk of severe and widespread infection may be reduced by:
Growing varieties with good resistance to yellow rust (as indicated by high resistance ratings on the HGCA Recommended List)
Select a first-choice variety and find its Diversification Group (DG).
Go to the selection matrix and find this DG under 'Chosen DG' on the left hand side of the table.
Read across the table to find the risk of disease spread for each companion DG.
High = high risk of spread of yellow rust
Mod = moderate risk of spread of yellow rust
Low = low risk of spread of yellow rust
Wherever possible choose combinations of varieties marked '+' but a combination marked 'y' is a lower risk than one marked 'Y'.
If there is a choice of varieties in a companion DG, give preference to those with higher resistance ratings.
Choose the Diversification Group (DG) for each of two varieties. Click on the DG group of one of the varieties and see the risk of yellow rust spreading between the two varieties.
As an example, Malacca is in DG1 and Consort in DG7. The table will show that there is a low risk of yellow rust spreading between these two varieties.
Since Robigus and Consort are both in DG7, there is a high risk of yellow rust spreading between the two varieties.

Spring wheat
Varieties are no longer allocated to DGs.
For purposes of diversification, spring wheat varieties with resistance ratings of 7, 8 or 9 can be regarded as belonging to DG1.
Other varieties are unlikely to contribute to diversification.
