Hereward

  • Hereward is a nabim Group 1 variety. It is still regarded as a high quality wheat but with a yield potential around 8% below that of Solstice it requires good premium payments to make it economic

  • nabim advise that Hereward can still perform well although it now has a higher degree of variability. The variety remains popular with millers, and because of its decline in acreage, they may offer contract growing schemes some of which offer further premiums for higher protein content to compensate for lower yields

  • Classified as ukp bread wheat: meets the specifications of the export brand and has support from end-users

  • Now takes a small market share of the market with around 2% of 2008 seed certification weights

  • High protein content and specific weight

  • Moderate Hagberg falling number and growers should give priority to the variety at harvest to maximise the chance of obtaining premium quality

  • Susceptible to eyespot

  • Breeder/ UK Agent: RAGT seeds Ltd (www.ragt.co.uk).
