An evidence-based review on the likely economic and environmental impact of genetically modified cereals and oilseeds for UK agriculture
Environment / 3810 / Published: 21 February 2013
There has been widespread uptake of genetically modified (GM) crops globally since they became commercially available in the mid 1990’s. This has had a significant impact on global agriculture and their use continues to grow in areas of the world where they are approved for use
New wheat root ideotypes for improved resource use efficiency and yield performance in reduced input agriculture.
Nutrition / 3575 / Published: 12 March 2012
The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of wheat root growth and morphology on the efficiency of nutrient uptake and hence yield and to explore how this interacts with selected environmental and agronomic parameters. We will assess the level of genetic variation for root development in a range of wheat genotypes in controlled environments and assess the performance of a sub-set of lines with contrasting root characters under field conditions. Interactions with mycorrhizal and pathogenic fungi and the effect of seed coat agrochemical applications will also be assessed. For future exploitation development of a mapping population and pre-breeding of improved lines using elite and more diverse germplasm sources will be initiated.
Screening for costs of disease resistance caused by stomatal dysfunction
Disease / 3670 / Published: 12 March 2012
The project will test important disease resistance genes for their effects on yield. The information gained on yield penalties associated with specific genes/QTL will be of value in its own right, but the goal is to provide practical techniques which can be used to screen novel resistance genes for yield costs in future.
Exploiting novel genes to improve resource use efficiency in wheat
Genetics / 3543 / Published: 9 March 2010
Improve resource use efficiency (RUE) and reduce green house gas emissions by developing more tightly linked genetic markers and physiological understanding for Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) that increase yield without increasing lodging risk or the crops requirement for inputs.
Control of infertility in wheat by phenotype screening
Genetics / 3438 / Published: 12 February 2010
The overall aim was to support the Sustainable Arable LINK Project ‘Control of infertility in wheat by phenotype screening and genetic analysis of varieties and breeding lines’. This SA LINK project [LK09116] was recommended for funding at the SA LINK Project Management Committee meeting on 1st July 2008. The project sponsors are: HGCA, the Scottish Government and BBSRC. The original start date was 1st September 2008. The SA LINK consortium comprises: Nickerson-Advanta Ltd. RAGT Seeds Ltd, KWS UK Ltd, SAC and the John Innes Centre (JIC).
Exploiting resource use efficiency and resilience in ancient wheat species (PhD)
Genetics / 3624 / Published: 7 January 2010
Climate change and the increasing cost of artificial fertilisers means that it is important to maximise the Water and Nitrogen Use Efficiency (collectively; Resource Use Efficiency) of modern wheat varieties.
Improving resource use efficiency in barley through protecting sink capacity
Genetics / 3458 / Published: 4 January 2010
The aim of this project is to identify mechanisms of fungicide effects on sink capacity, resource use efficiency (especially nitrogen) and yield of high quality grain, to guide treatment decisions
Reducing the carbon footprint of the lubricants industry by the substitution of mineral oil with rapeseed oil (LK0843)
Genetics / 3356 / Published: 14 November 2007
To investigate methods of reducing the oil PUFA content in oilseed rape varieties without substantially reducing cold tolerance and yield. Use this knowledge to develop a closed supply chain to extensively substitute fossil-derived oil for the lubricants industry.
Delivery of Ppd1 tools and novel allelic effects useful to UKFORWARD SLASH NOT ALLOWEDEU wheat improvement
Genetics / 3278 / Published: 7 August 2007
This project will help develop a pre-breeding platform at NIAB for the delivery of traits arising from academic research in pre-competitive UK varieties that can be accessed by commercial breeders.
