Population genetic analysis of pyrethroid resistant grain aphid (Sitobion avenae) using high resolution microsatellite markers
Pests / 2140004 / Published: 7 August 2013
This project will measure the frequency and spread of kdr forms in the English population (using samples collected in suction traps and from field crops) and use these to examine the more detailed genetic composition of resistant aphids in the population compared to their sensitive counterparts.
Validation of an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy for pollen beetle to minimise the development of insecticide resistance
Pests / 2140005 / Published: 7 August 2013
The project will investigate the impact of different numbers of pollen beetles on the yield of winter and spring oilseed rape in the presence or absence of insecticide treatments in crops with a range of plants/m2 and canopy size.
Improving risk assessment and control of saddle gall midge (Haplodiplosis marginata)
Pests / 3806 / Published: 16 July 2013
Severe, widespread outbreaks occurred in continuous cereals on heavy land in 2010 and 2011. The occasional nature of the pest in the UK means that experience of the problem is minimal, when compared to more regular pests.
Combating insecticide resistance in major UK pests
Pests / 3780 / Published: 22 April 2013
Our overall aim is to maintain effective chemical control of economically important pests of agriculture and horticulture by using appropriate insecticide resistance management strategies.
Control of insecticide-resistant grain aphids, Sitobian avenae, and BYDV in winter cereals
Pests / 3797 / Published: 21 January 2013
This project will benefit growers and agronomists by informing them of the optimum control strategy to reduce the risk of BYDV when resistance grain aphids are present.
Autumn Survey of wheat bulb fly incidence
Pests / 3758 / Published: 5 October 2012
This project aims to establish the annual incidence of wheat bulb fly in the autumn to allow farmers/agronomists to decide on the need for insecticidal seed treatment and/or egg hatch or deadheart sprays.
Combating Resistance to Aphicides in UK Aphid Pests
Pests / 3768 / Published: 9 August 2012
The project will monitor the response of field-collected live samples of peachpotato aphid to a range of novel aphicides and also monitor for established forms of resistance. This close vigilance is essential to safeguard the contribution of these compounds to aphid pest management in the UK as resistant aphids that cannot be controlled will cause crop losses. Other important aphid pests (including cereal aphids), representing the interests of the project consortium, will also be monitored and baseline data established.
Insights into the defence of honey bees against insecticides (PhD)
Pests / 3656 / Published: 22 August 2011
Looking to optimise methylene dioxyphenol moiety (pesticide) effectiveness against pests whilst minimising the effects on beneficial insects.
Identification, prevalence and impacts of viral diseases in UK winter wheat crops (PhD)
Disease / 3625 / Published: 7 January 2010
The theoretical limit for winter wheat grain yields in the UK is around 14 t/ha, but the yields achieved in commercial crops are substantially smaller; typically around 7.8 t/ha. Since about 1996 yield has begun to plateau but there is no evidence that yield improvements from plant breeding have slowed.
Aphid advisory alerts
Pests / 3475 / Published: 13 May 2009
Forecasts of aphid flight times and numbers in spring and early summer will be provided in early March each year. Information on the insecticide resistance status of Myzus persicae and the presence in them of TUYV will also be provided. Longer term assessments of the potential impacts of climate change will also be provided.
