New strategies to maintain autumn grass-weed control in cereals and oilseed rape
Weeds / PR509 / Published: 25 March 2013
Effective grass weed control is essential if rotations of mainly autumn-sown crops are to be maintained.
Desk study to evaluate contributory causes of the current yield plateau in wheat and oilseed rape
Genetics / PR502 / Published: 13 November 2012
To address the lack of progression in UK average farm yields for wheat and oilseed rape, national yield trends were analysed in relation to cropped area, genetic improvement, weather patterns, economic influences, crop nutrition and protection, plus other aspects of agronomy (project 3760).
Maximising the control achieved by soil-applied herbicides
Weeds / PR501 / Published: 21 September 2012
This project aimed at exploring the relationship between the spray deposit distribution at the soil surface and product efficacy when using products with uptake routes primarily through the shoot or the roots.
Dormancy in grass weeds
Weeds / PR498 / Published: 22 August 2012
Innate or primary dormancy is a natural condition that develops as the seed matures. It prevents premature germination of the seed whilst it is still attached to the plant or just after shedding and allows for dispersal of the seed from the parent plant.
Understanding and combating the threat posed by rye-grass (lolium multiflorum) as a weed of arable crops
Weeds / SR18 (PhD) / Published: 26 April 2011
Lolium multiflorum (Italian rye-grass) is an increasing problem as a weed of arable crops in the UK and many other countries. However, there exists only limited knowledge on many basic aspects of this weeds agro-ecology and how it interacts with cultural and chemical control methods. Therefore, the aim of this project was to characterise better both the agro-ecology and the basis of resistance to ACCase inhibitors in this species.
Proof of concept of automated mapping of weeds in arable fields
Weeds / PR471 / Published: 27 July 2010
The project investigated whether it would be possible to remove the main technical hindrance to precision application of herbicides to arable crops in the UK, namely creating geo-referenced weed maps for each field.
Integrated management of herbicide resistance
Weeds / PR466 / Published: 1 March 2010
Research was conducted to improve our understanding of herbicide resistance in the grass-weed, black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides). Research aims were to: Quantify the effectiveness of resistance mitigation strategies; Develop robust tests for resistance to ALS (acetolactate synthase) inhibitors; Investigate sampling strategies to improve resistance detection; Quantify the impact of population dynamics; Develop more sustainable resistance management strategies for individual fields.
An up-to-date cost:benefit analysis of precision farming techniques to guide growers of cereals and oilseeds
Weeds / RR71 / Published: 20 May 2009
Economic benefits may result from higher yields, saved inputs or faster work rates, and depend on farm size, cropping and the amount of soil, crop or yield variation as well as crop values and input prices.
Pesticide availability for cereals and oilseeds following revision of Directive 91-414-EEC effects of losses and new research priorities
Pests / RR70 / Published: 18 March 2009
Pesticides are currently under pressure as a result of changing legislation in Europe (revision of 91/414/EEC) and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.
Developing an effective strategy for the sustainable control of Italian rye-grass (Lolium multiflorum)
Weeds / PR421 / Published: 28 September 2007
The aim of the project was to identify specific aspects of crop and herbicide management that would optimise control of Italian rye-grass (Lolium multiflorum) in wheat with a range of herbicides.
