Desk study to evaluate contributory causes of the current yield plateau in wheat and oilseed rape
Genetics / PR502 / Published: 13 November 2012
To address the lack of progression in UK average farm yields for wheat and oilseed rape, national yield trends were analysed in relation to cropped area, genetic improvement, weather patterns, economic influences, crop nutrition and protection, plus other aspects of agronomy (project 3760).
Cost-effective sampling strategies for soil management
Nutrition / PR485 / Published: 5 April 2012
Current recommendations for soil sampling are based primarily on anecdotal evidence of what sampling is sufficient. They do not relate the sampling effort to the consequences of erroneous soil nutrient information. These consequences might include reduced profitability or the long term development of nutrient excess or deficiency. A previous HGCA project showed that it is possible to optimize the sample designs to perform better than the W in terms of sampling errors per core taken. However such schemes might not be as simple to implement in the field. These factors suggest there is a need to assess the sampling requirements for soil nutrient management so that the best sampling design and the rational sampling effort (i.e. number of cores) can be determined.
The relationship between soil mineral nitrogen, applied nitrogen and yields in Scottish soils
Soil / PR484 / Published: 23 March 2012
Understanding of the relationship between soil nitrogen, crop residues and crop nitrogen offtake in Scottish arable soils is limited. In this study, an average of 27 fields were soil sampled to measure SMN (soil mineral nitrogen) each year from 2007-2009, covering most of the main arable area of Scotland.
Detecting soil nitrogen supplies by canopy sensing Proof of concept – Phase 2
Nutrition / PR460 / Published: 2 November 2009
This report describes a second year of research that tested whether soil nitrogen supplies to cereal crops can be detected using canopy sensors; the first season was reported in HGCA Project Report No. 427.
An up-to-date cost:benefit analysis of precision farming techniques to guide growers of cereals and oilseeds
Weeds / RR71 / Published: 20 May 2009
Economic benefits may result from higher yields, saved inputs or faster work rates, and depend on farm size, cropping and the amount of soil, crop or yield variation as well as crop values and input prices.
Identification of optimum seedbed preparation for establishment using soil structural visualisation
Soil / SR06 (PhD) / Published: 13 November 2008
Identification of optimum seedbed preparation for establishment using soil structural visualisation
Detecting soil nitrogen supplies by canopy sensing, proof of concept
Soil / PR427 / Published: 1 February 2008
Detecting soil nitrogen supplies by canopy sensing, proof of concept
The policy environment for publicly-funded research on cereals and oilseeds
Variety trials / PR409 / Published: 25 January 2007
This report provides information about the policy environment for publicly funded research on cereals and oilseeds as part of the review for research and development strategy 2007-10.
The effect of cultivation method on optimum plant population in winter wheat
Soil / PR405 / Published: 26 October 2006
This project aimed to understand the impact of reduced tillage on crop establishment and optimum plant population, by understanding how cultivation practice may limit the crop’s ability to compensate for low plant populations.
‘Controlled traffic’ farming: Literature review and appraisal of potential use in the U.K.
Soil / RR59 / Published: 7 April 2006
The review assessed, through international literature, the incidence and impact of soil compaction in cropping systems.
