Optimising the use of grain stirrers to enhance on-floor drying
Feed and food safety / PR520 / Published: 10 September 2013
This is the final report of a 36 month project (RD-2008-3615) which started in April 2010. The aim of this project was to examine how stirring influences drying, and how the potential advantages can be best exploited, with a particular focus on potential to save costs for users.
Investigation into the specific weight differences between wheat varieties tested in the HGCA Recommended List and commercially-grown crops from 2007–2012
Variety trials / PR515 / Published: 19 July 2013
This study compared quality information from HGCA Recommended List trials and from commercial grain samples taken between 2007 and 2012. The aims were to integrate variety quality data collected from these two sources in order to investigate quality differences between varieties tested in the RL and those crops grown commercially and to identify factors which may account for variable specific weight measurements between seasons.
Survey of current agronomic practices influencing free fatty acid content in oilseed rape during the 2012-2012 season
Variety trials / PR514 / Published: 16 July 2013
High levels of free fatty acids (FFAs) in rapeseed oil were a problem in 2012, particularly in Scotland. This research looks at how region, variety, cultivation method, harvest method, drying method and storage method affected free fatty acid levels in oilseed rape during harvest 2012
Study of Fusarium langsethiae infection in UK cereals
Feed and food safety / SR23 / Published: 9 July 2013
This research sought to generate novel information on the epidemiology and life-cycle of Fusarium langsethiae to aid the development of control strategies to minimize T-2 and HT-2 mycotoxin content in cereals
Reduction in diffuse pollution of poultry operations through selection of wheat cultivars of high and consistent nutritional quality
Feed and food safety / PR511 / Published: 24 June 2013
The objectives of the project were to characterise precisely defined genetic stocks of wheat for nutritional value so that it can be predicted accurately, leading to reduced variability in broiler performance and greater confidence in the use of this raw material. Such improvements in bird performance would also reduce diffuse pollution associated with poor-quality diets fed to poultry.
Ensuring that UK cereals used in malting, milling and animal feed achieve food and feed safety standards
Feed and food safety / PR510 / Published: 16 April 2013
This project is the latest in a series looking at the occurrence of key contaminants in UK-grown cereals to ensure compliance with legal and guideline limits for food and animal feedstuffs.
Biopesticides for the control of storage insect pests
Feed and food safety / PR507 / Published: 4 February 2013
The work has concentrated on two different fungal isolates, both of which were found from insects in UK grain stores. The main objectives of the current project were: 1. To improve the efficacy of the insect-specific fungi when in contact with insects. 2. To improve the delivery of the insect-specific fungus to the insects. 3. To ensure the consistency and the safety of the product. 4. To ensure that the biopesticide product has wide acceptability and is effective under practical use.
Improving risk assessment to minimise fusarium mycotoxins in harvested oats and malting barley
Disease / PR500 / Published: 25 October 2012

Predicting grain protein to meet market requirements for breadmaking and minimise diffuse pollution from wheat production
Feed and food safety / PR483 / Published: 3 November 2011
The aim of this project was to develop a system to aid decisions on the use of foliar sprays of urea during grain filling to boost grain protein of milling wheat crops.
Improving risk assessment to minimise fusarium mycotoxins in harvested wheat grain
Feed and food safety / PR477 / Published: 21 October 2011
European legislative limits for Fusarium mycotoxins, deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZON) were introduced in 2006 for cereals and cereal products for human consumption. Fusarium mycotoxins were monitored in UK wheat from 2006-2008. There was a large variation in levels detected each year. Lowest levels were detected in 2006, which had a dry summer. Highest levels were detected in 2008, which had a wet summer and, in particular, a delayed wet harvest. The HGCA fusarium mycotoxin risk assessment was validated/amended based on each years results.
