No-till: opportunities and challenges for cereal and oilseeds growers
Soil / IS14 / Published: 29 March 2012
No-till means sowing directly into the residues of the previous crop without any prior topsoil loosening. The objective is to reduce production costs while maintaining or increasing yields with possible added environmental benefits.
Soil conditions and oilseed rape establishment
Soil / IS10 / Published: 17 July 2009
Oilseed rape seedlings are weak and susceptible to poor seedbed conditions, weather and early growing conditions. Many growers have settled on establishment methods that suit their farms. However, different seasons require flexibility due to weather conditions and degree/location of soil compaction as well as available machinery on the farm.
Soil management for sustainable profit 2005
Soil / G27 / Published: 23 May 2005
Farmers in receipt of the single farm payment must keep land in Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC). Cross compliance requires farmers to apply principles of good soil management to minimise the risk of problems like soil erosion and capping. Reduced cultivations, non-inversion and conservation tillage can often contribute to achieving GAEC.
Assessing within-field soil variability
Soil / TS70 / Published: 1 August 2003
Many soil physical and chemical properties vary within fields. Where this variation is large, and can be managed at practical scales, variable management within a field, eg for lime, fertiliser or cultivations, may be worthwhile.
