Overview
Weed management has become an increasing challenge for growers and agronomists due to changing EU regulations, herbicide resistance and a lack of new control methods. These challenges require research into integrated approaches which use both cultural and chemical control.
Research examples
Project 3789 is addressing herbicide resistance in black-grass and broad-leaved weeds. The project aims to add value to fallows by incorporating cover crops that can enhance weed suppression as well as improve soil structure, fertility and biodiversity. Project 3605 focuses on more accurate herbicide applications in oilseed rape crops, meaning there can be effective control without breaking spraying restrictions.
Future research
Research will continue to focus on integrated control methods so that optimum control can be retained throughout the rotation.
