US maize analysis – The importance of harvest timing in 2013

Following the drought in 2012, US and indeed global maize stocks in the spot market are tight until the 2013 harvest is underway. This is a key price supportive factor in the spot market, which is likely to be eroded once the new crop has arrived.

US Dec-13 maize futures continued to test recent lows today after yesterday closing at the lowest since November 2010. Favourable conditions in the Corn Belt, despite lower crop condition yesterday, pressured new crop prices. Reports that China is considering selling state reserves of maize also added further downward sentiment in old crop markets.
