Nutrient management
Key tools and publications
Managing micronutrients
Micronutrients are essential trace elements and are often applied to insure against potential yield loss. This publication provides a concise overview of the use of micronutrients in cereals and oilseed rape crops.
Manage nutrients for wheat production
HGCA has produced comprehensive guidance on using nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S), whether applied as a fertiliser or organic manure.
Manage nutrients for oilseed rape production
Whether it is deciding on annual applications for nitrogen (N) or sulphur (S) or how to maintain phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) or pH levels, HGCA’s Oilseed rape guide is a good initial reference point for nutrient management in oilseed rape.
The above guide refers to several complementary publications.
- Managing oilseed rape canopies for yield
- Improving oil content and minimising green seeds in oilseed rape

The barley growth guide is a complete guide to spring and winter barley production and includes sections on nitrogen requirements.

Manage nutrients from organic manures
As the nutrient content of organic manures is often highly variable, HGCA has supported the development of a sampling service to provide a low-cost, rapid and reliable nutrient analysis of organic material.
Even where the nutrient content of organic manures is known, it can often be challenging to calculate whether applying them would be beneficial. HGCA has invested in the development of MANNER-NPK software which can be used to quickly assess the economic value (£/ha) of organic manures. AHDB has produced a video, presented by Dr Lizzie Sagoo, soil scientist with ADAS, that demonstrates the software and its capability.
